What is COP, EER, Kw and BTU

AIR CONDITIONER COP & EER

COP – coefficient of performance, is the ratio of heating power to the power usage of the system. Simply put if the COP of the air conditioner system is 3.5 then for one kilowatt of energy used by the system, it will produce 3.5 kilowatts of heating. This is not an actual value of heating capacity because the power consumption of the system may be from 0.7 to 4 KW or even higher.

EER – energy efficiency ratio, is the ratio of cooling power to the power usage of the system. Simply put if the EER of the air conditioner system is 5 then for one kilowatt of energy used by the system, it will produce 5 kilowatts of cooling.

1 watt = 0,001 kilowatt. 1 kilowatt = 1000 watt.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO CORRECTLY SIZE AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM?

According to Fujitsu, over 50% of the air conditioning installations are incorrectly sized. An undersized air conditioning system will not be able to do the job and cool your premises during the hottest time of the year. Every cowboy air conditioner fitter understands that undersized air conditioning system:

  1. Will not cool the premises to the desired temperature during summer months when the temperature soars
  2. Therefore operate at the peak of the capacity causing premature wear and tear
  3. Cost more in electricity because operating at the peak of the capacity
  4. But the initial purchase cost is lower, thus be more appealing to the customer

To avoid the trap of under-sizing the equipment the cowboy installers simply go for oversized air conditioning units. The problems with oversized equipment are:

HEAT LOAD AND HEAT GAIN

Heat load is the sum of all heat sources inside of cooled space. These are people and animals in the room as well as the activity in the room. For instance, people cooking or engaged in sports radiate more heat than people chilling on the sofa. Other contributors to a heat load are lighting equipment, appliances, kettle, computers, printers, broadband routers, skybox, PlayStation, and other similar items. 

Heat gain is the heat gained from outside of the cooled space. This is heat introduced by ventilation, infiltration, solar heat gain, and heat conduction. Heat gain of similar size properties can vary significantly depending on the windows sizes, windows orientation, building materials, types of windows, building insulation, and even flora around the building.
